Prowl the disease ridden streets inVampyr- a darkly atmospheric action RPG from the studio behind 'Remember Me' and 'Life is Strange', developed using Unreal Engine 4.
Set in early 20th century Britain during a bout of the lethal Spanish flu, the streets of London are crippled by disease, violence and fear. In a completely disorganized and ghostly city, those who are either fools, desperate, or unlucky enough to walk the streets lay prey to Britain's most elusive predators: the Vampires. Emerging from the chaos, a tormented figure awakes. As the player it is you who determines how to harness your new powers, by specializing in deadly, versatile RPG skill-trees that change the way you play. As a doctor recently turned into a Vampire, you try to understand your new affliction. Your quest of intuition, discoveries and struggles, will be filled with death and drama, while your attempt to stem the irrepressible thirst that constantly drives you to take human lives. As you cling to what remains of your humanity, your decisions will ultimately shape the fate of your hero while searching for answers in the coughing, foggy aftermath of the Spanish Flu.

One of the biggest negatives of the entire experience is the loading times which are absolutely terrible and you will see lots of loading screens in the game for entering new areas, or after you die, which takes at least 30-40 seconds to get you back into it, but Vampyr also slows down when playing the game which judders you out of it with temporary halts and the screen saying 'loading' like it's 1998 again. This more than anything else really takes the experience down and shouldn't be an issue for modern games.
Speaking of combat, if you want to avoid immense frustration turning people really is the only option throughout much of the game with such rigged enemies and woeful gameplay mechanics. There are different weapons including ranged and melee where Jonathan will do his best Tiger Woods impression on the 18th swinging a club with intense anger like he's just fluffed a shot. The trouble is that you often hit nothing due to a infuriating stamina bar and then you're dead because of those misses. It is not really alleviated through the gunplay which requires a single button press and the longest reloading sequence I have seen in a video game quite possibly ever. A game and its difficulty is not necessarily unwelcome unless it happens to be artificial and it certainly is in Vampyr which will actively handicap you through its poor gameplay and enemy design. Jonathan has numerous vampire abilites but none of them are particularly interesting and don't feel overpowered but if anything are the opposite.
The story is underwhelming having you take the role of Jonathan Reid coming back from the war to find a London ravaged by illness. Most of the characters in the game are very cliched and the dialogue wheels require hints which means that large part of it are inaccessible without further trudging about trying to find something here or there to add to the backstory. It's such a slog and the payoff is simply not there for the player. Ultimately the choices that you make are not as striking as say Mass Effect or even the Telltale games and it's largely binary where you can make a choice.
---Summary--- (Scored out of 10)
Graphics 6 Quite dodgy in places. Nothing will blow you away and it feels as though it has been covered in a shine or sheen.
Sound 6 The soundtrack is rarely up to scratch. Voice acting is solid enough although not really remarkable either.
Gameplay 4 Horrible unfair difficulty spikes, an AI that cheats, a slow player character overwhelmed and underpowered results in not a lot of fun.
Lifespan 4 To be fair most of the achievements are not awful to get but the chances that you will replay this are slim unless you enjoy things getting on your nerves.
Vampyr is a massive disappointment and I had been looking forward to this for some time. It had the setting and the story that I thought I could get into but the gameplay, atrocious loading times and empty streets really make this a lot more trouble than it is worth. It really does lack a lot of polish and engaging content to really make it worth your time.
for me the combat is repetitive dull and uninspired you get none of the classic powers you think of being a vampire.
the conversations are completely pointless they and you say the same thing over and over missions are all pretty much the same go there kill this do it again not fun dontnod not fun.
the absolute worst part of the game is the intrusive load screens im playing on OG xbox which might be the issue but even so there horrendous I walked down a street and I had 3 load screens on the same damn road and each one lasted a minute to two minutes making you know playing it an chore so I gave up until its patched.id advise anyone not to bother with this.
one good point is if you have a usb keyboard you can get infinite xp making combat easier not any fun though still but makes getting though this a bit quicker
