Thoughtful personal war story

This is a work of fiction but it is insightful into how one man performs in his war, his feelings towards his enemy, and the dreadful dilemmas of command when lives depend on the decisions made. I thought it was beautifully told, using the device of an old man telling his story to a reporter and it is well edited (so guns have breaches?) although others have pointed out minor inaccuracies. The deep feelings of hatred, expressed in contemporary language, are well conveyed. The action sequences are not very detailed but really do share the experience of being there and only seeing the very small picture.

Poorly written. It might give some insight into one man's motivation but the narrative is disjointed and not really believable. It does not provide any indication of the general feeling amongst the navy personnel of the period.

Fascinating Look at Pearl Harbor and WWII From a Naval Perspective

This takes the reader into the minds owe commanding the ships in the Pacific, from Pearl Harbor through the end of the war. The summary at the end was especially enlightening, considering the backdrop of our current political situation and collective worldview:

“occasionally, you have to fight. You do have to put a stop to it, to preserve as much life as possible. Sometimes that does involve lopping off a few heads to save the greater number of people from the insanities of a country that has obviously gone mad. But you don’t have to hate them. The minute you succumb to the urge to take revenge, to kill just to get even or to hate them, you have given in to the one thing that, left to run unchecked, will keep mankind locked in a state of war, to a greater or lesser degree, for all of time. It’s the most dangerous enemy mankind will ever face. It isn’t the Japanese or the Germans or anybody else. And it isn’t the bombs or ships or planes. The real enemy is vengeance.”

This one will be on my heart for some time, I’m certain.

I should be angry at Brett Ashton. This book kept me up until 3:45 this morning. I just couldn't put it down until I finished it. I'm a historical fiction junkie and I rank this with the best of all I've read. It is a compelling story based on the facts of the most horrific attack ever perpetrated on America.
It's told from a very personal standpoint in a way that demands your attention mixing the fact and fiction in a narrative that tells just how the attack happened and from the the eyes and feelings of a navel officer that experienced it from beginning to end. Along with the vivid action account, we are exposed to the personal feelings of this officer, that questions the reasons and motivations of war in general.
In my opinion this book ranks right up top along side "To Try Mens Souls" the Gingrich/ Forstchen book about the famous Christmas day battle for Trenton and 24 hours with George Washington and his men, telling us about a famous day in the history of the American revolution. This one kept me up late one night also.

I certainly hope that Mr. Ashton has more stories to tell! I'll await them.
