Told in alternating timelines and perspectives, we see both what led up to the experiments and subsequent fight between Victor and Eli ten years ago, and we also see both Eli and Victor’s perspectives in the present. Eli has decided that all EO’s are unnatural and is working his way through executing them all. Victor has plans to stop him.
This fast paced, dark, engaging story will not disappoint!
I LOVED this book! I should have known I would, since I loved A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows by the same author. I really enjoyed how flawed many of the characters were – some were dark, some were broken, and some were trying to figure out their lives and their powers. I really liked how well written they all were, but especially Eli. So many books tell you who the bad guy is and tell you they are scary, etc, but don’t actually make you feel it. You definitely feel it in Vicious. I HATED Eli, which is a sign of great writing if you ask me! I actually felt like I wanted to stab him in the eye with a thousand needles vs. just knowing and understanding that he was the antagonist. I liked that.
The book was very fast paced, and there was a lot of build up leading to Eli and Victor’s final showdown, which I loved! I also really enjoyed that instead of dumping us into the present time and telling us about Victor and Eli’s past, that we also had the flashback chapters to show us. I think it worked really well in this book and lent a lot to the overall story.
It looks like there will be a sequel to Vicious at some point, which is awesome, because the characters are great. That said, the book ends with everything wrapped up, no cliffhangers, so if you’re waiting to start the book until the second one is released, don’t! Start it now!
I’d definitely recommend this book for fans of the Fantasy genre! I feel like it was right on the brink of YA Fantasy, but landed in the Fantasy without the YA, which I appreciated.
I first saw this book a couple of months ago and thought it looked epic. I mean, the whole "blood washed" city thing going on on the cover was very appealing, but it being an adult book (in age, not content) made me cringe away from it.
You see, this is a YA blog; meaning, I review Young Adult books here...nothing else. To strengthen my case, I even created a separate blog to review picture books (The Read Aloud Dossier). So, yeah. I'm really strict about this kind of thing.
But then I remembered how much I loved This Savage Song and decided I *might* love this book, too. I did. So much.
Vicious is the original, spell-binding tale of frenemies gone wrong. On one side we have Victor who's more bright than dark, but doesn't pretend to be something he's not; while Eli pretends to be light when really he's dark as my soul the Monday after having the Summer off.
You see, they both see something in each other that draws them to each other, but that initial attraction (for lack of a better word) is weakened when Eli shares his thesis topic: EO's or, namely, ExtraOrdinarys. Victor, while having a just as strong thesis, is jealous, but soon they band together and start testing out a new hypothesis: can EO's be created?
From there, we're given a fast-paced, page-turning adventure of discovery, deceit, revenge, and redemption. I actually stopped reading this book, put it on hold for a week, but I couldn't forget it and I'm so glad I finished it!
I highly recommend this book! Here's to praying there's a sequel and thanking GOD there's a prequel!
I went into this book blind on the recommendation of a Goodreads friend that answered my status update where I requested a REALLY good book. Thank you Rachel! I needed this.
I thought it might be PNR, but it wasn't. Paranormal yes, romance no. A thriller? Maybe. Horror? Possibly. I have no idea what to classify it as. I've never read anything like it. It was so original, so well plotted, that I think my jaw stayed on the floor the whole time I was reading.
I don't usually care for plots that jump back and forth between timelines, but this one did it so well that I can't imagine it any other way. Somehow, the time jumps helped keep me on the edge of my seat throughout the story.
The book is full of villains and the good guys (if there were any) don't stand a chance. I have no idea if the author wrote or is writing a follow-up. This book stands alone as well as makes an intriguing premise for a next in series.
I have to read more of this author's work. The writing and editing are so perfect that neither ever came into play while I was engrossed in the story. It is an absolutely professional delivery of this novel.
