4.0 su 5 stelle Word-lovers, feast your eyes 29 settembre 2014
Di Aislynn Faire - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

For anyone enamored of the English language, any one of Sir Walter Scott's novels is a veritable word feast. This first installment in the series of books that collectively came to be called the Waverly Novels is no exception. While the story lacks in the excitement and suspense department, the characters are brilliantly drawn, the scenery described is breathtakingly gorgeous, and the larger-than-life characters playing in this historical fiction drama are admirable and great. I highly recommend this (free!) edition to anyone interested in Scotland, its wild Highlands and inhabitants, and 18th century British history.
3.0 su 5 stelle I would recommend reading about the Stuart history 14 marzo 2017

The book starts off rather slow, but the story picks up half way through the book. I had previously read a book on Scottish story before I read this book; this was immensely helpful in following the story line. I would recommend reading about the Stuart history, the Act of Union, and Scottish/English history of the 1600's and 1700's to really understand this book. The main character, Edward Waverly starts out rather naive, but starts to wise-up during the story. I think Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott was the better book.
3.0 su 5 stelle History and Fiction Coming Together to Make a Great Novel 21 febbraio 2015
Di Juan - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

Superb work of art! Sir Walter Scott takes you on a trip through British history and there comes a point where you don't know if you're reading a historical account with fictitious additions or a novel with the addition of actual facts. The first few chapters are almost unbearable but I like the way he addresses the reader and "puts himself in your shoes" and justifies himself, in a way. I admit I knew very little about the Jacobite rebellion, which made the novel more compelling. It's exciting how the protagonist is of two minds about joining the Jacobite uprising, given that he's an Englishman himself. If you're patient enough to go through the first chapters, read this and you'll surely have a nice time and make a pleasant mental journey to 18th century Great Britain.

I have not yet read this novel. But I've read others by Scott and find them very enjoyable. There are always surprises in his novels and the narratives are wonderful. You sure cannot speed read through these any more than you can speed read Dickens. You need to slow down and savor the language.

4.0 su 5 stelle Great Walter Scott bonanza 18 ottobre 2012

If you are feeling like spending a good year in another world - the world of Sir Walter Scott - then this massive collection is your passport to adventure. Escape your troubles for a considerable time and all at a truly minimal price.
The e-book is well formatted for my Kindle. (Not all e-books are formatted so well.) Occasional pictures are included.
I only got this collection of Scott's works about a week ago, and am only now journeying through volume 2 of his first novel, Waverly. Amazon sent an e-mail already requesting a review after only one week! This massive collection will keep me supplied with excellent fiction for a year! The only reason I did not give this collection all 5 stars is that I haven't yet read most of it!
