Sinossi

They are the US military's special response unit for monsters and other creepy-crawly creatures that go bump in the night. They are Weirdo Company. Lead by Lt. Paul Harper, the team embarks on a mission uncomfortably close to home: Contact has been lost with a small farming town in the northeastern United States. What the team finds there will set them up for the fight of their lives, as the townspeople have been turned into vicious, bloodthirsty zombies.

But Harper and his team, including a green new recruit Davis, will discover that there is far more danger in this town than just zombies. Because if the people have mutated into something grotesque and dangerous, what has happened to the farm animals?

"Zombies vs Unicorns" is the first story in the 'Weirdo Company' series and features thrilling, summer blockbuster-style zombie-killing action and a few fun surprises.

(Contains strong language and violence)

5.0 su 5 stelle Quick, funny twist on the boring old zombie trope 29 giugno 2017

This fast-paced introduction to Guilfoy's Weirdo Company jumps into action quickly with a well-considered world and fully developed characters. Sprinkled with humor, the story is a cheerful romp through the usually boring zombie tale.

--Because while I agree with the other two reviews (and I saw a few lingering typos besides), I really enjoyed "Zombies vs. Unicorns" because it took me back to my days as a kid watching Saturday morning cartoons. And if Weirdo Company had been a cartoon in the 90's, I would have been all over that. I used to love Ghostbusters so much I had the proton pack and everything.

There wasn't a whole lot of scene-setting or character-building, and in a longer work with broader scope that would have been good to have. But when you've got a short, action-oriented piece like this, custom-built for smart-ass quips, and over-the-top set pieces, brevity seemed to add to the overall flavor of the piece rather than take away from it.

As an analog for cartoons or week-night cable network movies, Ben's got a good thing here, and he seems to know what he's doing with it. I have to applaud him for hitting what he's aiming at. These are imaginative, easily-digestible episodes for the Kindle-packing B-movie fan waiting for the bus or sitting in the john. And reading a book is ALWAYS a better choice than Angry Birds for that.

I've got to back up off a full five for iffy editing and formatting. Sorry, Ben--I love ya, man, but you're a copy-editor. D:

The premise is interesting but I can't like characters who keep making stupid decisions. A recon team in an unknown hazmat zone who casually drink the local water and shower in a zombie house? Turning off the engine of the recon vehicle during the first 30 seconds of exploration, with known hostiles in the area?

There was no time spent on establishing mood or immersing me in the world. I felt at sea the entire time, struggling to keep oriented with who was where, and doing what.

In general, it felt as though the author just wanted to get to the story and didn't really want to spend any time on making his characters believable or paint me into the scene with them. If I had to guess, I would say this was a first draft to establish the scope of the story, which went straight to copy editing for typos and then off to publication. I would love to see this again after a detailed story edit.

I think I bought this one because the title made me laugh, and then I started reading and was SOOOO glad I had. While the content may border on lunacy, it's well-written and convincing lunacy, and as believable as anything involving Unicorns and Zombies ever could be. I've promised myself that the next few installments will find their way onto my Kindle too. Curse you Ben Guilfoy!
