'One of the top books on marriage I have read. As a pastor I will implore our people to read this book as soon as it is available.' --Chris Brauns

'Deeply probing, totally gospel-driven, full of insight and challenge...this book hooks the reader in with its honesty and realism.' --Julian Hardyman

Somehow, someway, every marriage becomes a struggle.

Everyone’s marriage morphs into something they didn’t intend it to be. At some point you need something sturdier than romance. You need something deeper than shared interests and mutual attraction. You need changed expectations, you need radical commitments, and, most importantly, you need grace.

5.0 su 5 stelle This is the best book on marriage my wife and I have read 6 novembre 2014

This is the best book on marriage my wife and I have read.

We tried several others, but none of them really jived with who we were and the struggles we were experiencing.

The first 13 months of our marriage were really difficult, I think it was partly because we were so different, and partly because we were so sinful at heart. We ended up in a small group from a church where they were going through this book, and it changed our marriage (as cliche as that sounds).

This book deals with the heart, and how wickedly evil it can be if you're going to be really honest with yourself. It really helped us to see our weaknesses, and in light of Christ "when I am weak, then I am strong."

The stories in it are kind of cheesy and long winded at times, but I think they help get the point across.

I can't recommend it enough, and I'm going to buy it for my newly married friends (along with a fun gift).

5.0 su 5 stelle It is written....GOD MUST BE AT THE HEAD OF ALL THINGS 10 febbraio 2017

Excellent read! I would recommend this book to EVERYONE considering marriage...engagement....married...seperated...and divorced. The lessons contained are realistics and helps couples understand that the romantic side of love is not enough to sustain even the most profound level of love for we are also have romanticize what love truly is. God is pleased when we please God. Following God's will in terms if how we treat one another is how we maintain peace in marriage. Godly grace exercised in marriage is the example of how we get through the marriage with grace.

5.0 su 5 stelle Worth it! 3 dicembre 2015

Excellent! Solid biblical principles and counsel on how to check your own selfishness and view yourself within a relationship as being an instrument of God's grace. The principle the author teaches at the very beginning, about viewing the other's sin, or weaknesses as evidences of God's grace to you because you can see/experience them - was mind boggling, but made so much sense! Definitely worth every bit you can get out of this to apply to your marriage (or relationship building toward marriage). We haven't yet gotten past the 4th chapter (we keep going back and gleaning new stuff from the first 4 chapts), but SO worth using this as tool in your marriage/relationship! It points to Christ and that's always where hope and change lie.

3.0 su 5 stelle Good content. Disappointing writing. 5 marzo 2015

I feel mixed emotions about this book. The content was AMAZINGLY helpful. (I mentor young married couples and am eager for them to think about the ideas and statements in this book). However, the writing is so loose, redundant and rambling that I am hesitant to hand my friends this book.

5.0 su 5 stelle The best book on marriage I've read 7 maggio 2011
Di Sheryl L. Phillips - Pubblicato su

Nobody I know goes into marriage expecting the reality that actually happens. And then every last one of us is left to figure out how to manage the rest of our lives in this uncomfortable and sometimes downright painful situation we hadn't anticipated. Some folks divorce; some bicker to the death; some grit their teeth and pretend everything's OK; some settle for silent desperation/separation under the same roof. We Christians tend to grit our teeth and label it "holiness." No wonder our young adult children are not attracted to emulate our marriages.

A knowledgeable counselor friend of mine says he estimates that only 5% of marriages (whether inside or outside the Church) are actually functioning in a state of peace, harmony and fulfillment. Marriage is not what most people expected it to be. But it IS what God designed it to be. The problem is that most of us don't want to know God's plan; we prefer our own plan and along with it, we prefer to live in varying degrees of misery.

So along comes Paul Tripp. Many of the ideas he presents in What Did You Expect? are not new. I heard them in numerous counselors' offices during the decades I was trying to save my own marriage. But Tripp synthesizes them more clearly than I have ever seen or heard them to date. And occasionally, he lays out original, mind-bending ideas I never have heard anywhere else.

With humility and compassion, with laser sharp insight, in understandable language, Mr. Tripp lays explosives under the foundation of everything the reader thinks he or she knows about marriage, and blows it sky high. Fortunately, Tripp also offers the tools for rebuilding the marriage with a much more substantial foundation using biblical principles with ample real-life examples for application.

Tripp's book is an indispensable and unique compendium of many years' worth of biblical counseling, common sense and professional counseling advice--none of which contradicts the other. It is by far the best book on marriage I have ever read. For those who choose to accept it and apply it, it will be life changing. Those who have ears, let them hear.
