As a mother of an obese daughter, I cried tears of relief as I read about the Bond's experiencing many things I have with my own child. Knowing there is someone out there who has overcome obesity with their child gives me so much hope. I have begun a new, healthier lifestyle/routine with my daughter and have already used many of the little tips I picked up from this book, such as comparing lost weight to something tangible; i.e. have them hold a 5 # sack of potatoes so they can see and feel what 5 # feels like. This worked well with my daughter, who recently lost 5 #. It has also benefited my child to read Breanna's interview at the end of the book, so she doesn't feel alone and knows it's normal to sort of hate the changes at first. Since Breanna's first move was to start walking every day, it was easier to get my own daughter up from the couch and walking with me.

Heidi was right... although you will find many articles online about healthy habits, weights, and foods for kids, there aren't many resources available to children as far as showing "before and after" success stories for kids. My own daughter commented recently about commercials on TV showing only men and women. I took her online and showed her Breanna's before/after photos and watched the glimmer of hope cross her face. This is what she needed: a CHILD'S weight loss story.

There is a 40-day meal and exercise plan included, which we intend to use, only modified a bit to fit our schedules. One thing I really liked about the recipes that were shared is that they were healthier versions of foods we like to have (i.e. "Comfort foods"). I mean, you aren't going to go from chicken nuggets and pizza to legumes and kale overnight. These recipes are a little more realistic than most I've found online.

This is an amazing, awe-inspiring story. As a mother of a 7 year-old child who is considered obese by BMI charts, Heidi's story has inspired me to make significant changes in our family's diet and activity level. Breanna's story broke my heart, as I am seeing the signs in my own daughter of depression, as she is starting to withdraw socially. When Heidi described the light going dim in her daughter's eyes, I felt as if she were talking about my own sweet daughter. I have felt overlooked by doctors and criticized by others, but with no real solutions offered. Heidi's story spoke to my heart, as one mother to another, and it jolted my foundation in a way that was neither condescending nor patronizing. I finally get it ... I am the problem, but I also have the solution now. I read this book over the course of two days and it has absolutely opened my eyes to my own complicity in buying into the "kid culture". Our family's path to health and wholeness has started, and I give Heidi and her beautiful daughter Breanna 100% of the credit for it. My heart is filled with gratitude for you sharing your journey.

This book changed our lives! For the last three checkups my 8 yr old daughter has been at the 95th percentile labeling her as obese. This year she gained 10 lbs in 6 months and I knew something was wrong. Took her back to her doctor for a mid year check up and the doctor said I didn't need to do anything and that she would probably even out come puberty. I knew we had to make some changes or else she was on track to gain 20 lbs in one year! Heidi Bond's story inspired me to seriously reduce the sweets and sugars entering my daughter's body and to change over to all whole grains. She was always an active child playing multiple sports, but on days when she didn't have practice we were guilty of sitting around the house. Now I make sure she gets 60 minutes of exercise every day! So far it's been four weeks and she's lost 4 lbs! I'm so proud of her and her BMI has dropped to 94th % getting her out of the obese category. We still have some work to do but this is a lifestyle change for us and I'm sure we'll get down to a healthy BMI.
Some big tips I learned from this book is that it's OK to talk to your child about their weight. They probably already know and feel different from their peers. I like Heidi's idea about offering incentives for the weight loss. Having a goal is a necessity and getting prizes along the way for every 5 lbs lost is really helping. My daughter can't wait for her 5 lb goal to pick out any stuffed animal she wants! At 10 lbs she gets an American Girl Doll. The recipes she includes in her book are realistic and easy to make.
I realize that my 8 yr old has a slower metabolism and will have to watch what she eats her whole life. I also have a 10 year daughter who can eat whatever she wants and stay skinny, but now the whole family is eating healthier and we're all better for it. Highly recommend this book to anyone fighting childhood obesity.

I have been intrigued by this story since I saw the Bond's on "Good Morning America". I read the book in one day and was not disappointed. I give it five stars because of the inspiring story and for the bravery of the Bond's with sharing this impressive story. They easily could have kept their issues private and let others who suffer from overeating and obesity in hopeless frustration.
As I was reading this book I kept thinking that Heidi might get a lot of criticism for being so ignorant any yet her ignorance in raising an obese child is the beauty of this story. Sometimes going to the simple basics are often ignored over fancy shmancy diets and/or psychobabble. Heidi's basic and guileless struggles is what helped her daughter recover from her food addictions by handling it in a basic and simplistic way. It was simply beautiful.
I am in my 40's and could lose 20 pounds and I feel so inspired to become active and eat healthier. Much more inspired by any diet book out there.
Thank you Bond's for being unselfish and sharing your struggles and success with us. I highly recommend this book for parents of overweight children and for anyone who wants inspiration and hope!

I related to so very much here. I too have felt the frustration due to lack of resources, and physicians that are too complacent in addressing the issue. As a caring mother we feel torn between not wanting to cause eating disorders, and wanting our child to be as healthy as possible. The "kid culture" issue, meaning the constant barrage of cupcakes and cookies, for every celebration under the sun, is also an ever present problem for some kids that seems inescapable.

The book gives me hope that change is possible, and that you can be the facilitator for this change, without ruining your daughter/son's self esteem at the same time. Knowing that Breanna was vehemently opposed to the healthy interventions, has made me feel better also. Having to make these changes with an all ready "strong willed " child, is a daunting task. Hearing an expert's opinion on the psychological consequences of all of this "change" in the mind of a child would also be helpful.
