I have come into yet another series midway, it seems. Whose Hand is book two featuring investigative reporter Skeeter Hughes. The author herself is a journalist and her writing chops show through quite clearly. The story is tight, to the point, and incredibly interesting as you follow Skeeter as she chases down a story that everyone keeps telling her is an old urban legend.

Another body and mobsters later and even the big boys are sitting up and taking notice.

Fast paced with action at every turn, this little plucky mystery will keep you turning pages.

I like mystery books. Let me rephrase that. I like well written mystery books. And this is a well written mystery book. The sub-plots added depth to the main story, and kept the reader not quite sure of the outcome, though I do have to say that the psychic should, perhaps, have been left out. I won't say anything more about him, as any new reader can figure out why (and decide if they agree) when they read the book. To be perfectly fair, I have NOT read the first book of this series, and only picked this one up when it was up for free. I don't rate books by price though, and wouldn't have felt that buying this one was a waste of money at all. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and may, if I ever get caught up with my reading list, I may well look toward reading her other offerings.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a good, well written, mystery.

Full disclosure: Judy's husband was my roommate in college. I was in their wedding. I've known her for a long time; I've been reading her stuff since she wrote for the college newspaper.

"Whose Hand?" is the second in her Skeeter Hughes series. Skeeter is a middle-aged newspaper reporter and mother of two teens, living and working in Minneapolis. The story starts in winter with her husband walking out of their home, and BJ,a burned-out Vietnam vet, contacting her with an incredible story. BJ tells her that the previous fall, he snagged a hand while fishing in Lake Harriet. He was so surprised that he let it fall back into the lake. Skeeter, who has recently become her paper's missing persons reporter, decides to see if any of the hand belongs to any of the missing persons.

The strengths of this novel are Borger's intimate familiarity with the workings of newspapers, Minnesota, and family. The difficulties of being a working mom are always in focus. She writes like a newspaper reporter with short, punchy sentences; the novel moves along quickly.

There are some missteps, although few in number. At one point she introduces a new character, a psychic, but doesn't really go with it. I'm pretty sure he will disappear in the movie screenplay. A key feature of the climax felt a little too much like "Fargo"; I'm sure it will remain in the screenplay.

I am not someone who reads a lot of mystery novels, but I am looking forward to the third in the series.

What a great read! I couldn't put it down -- not even for a second ... read the whole book in one day and came in from my backyard deck at 9:30 PM covered with mosquito bites! (Didn't even feel a bite until the itching started later that night!) That's how good it was! Judith keeps the action rolling....ends each chapter with such force you cannot HELP but start the very next chapter immediately ....and so it goes! Her descriptions are neat and clean....just the way I like them....gets the setting, feeling and mood captured for the reader in seconds. Love the sarcasm, grit, bite and sheer humor. Definitely a companion read with her first book, "Where's Billie!" No pun intended, HANDS DOWN!

Clever character development in this novel. Even Skeeter is tricked into believing some characters aren't whom they seem. The ending is surprisingly calm after all the reader is led to believe.
