5.0 su 5 stelle Eye opening story 31 dicembre 2012

I, like so many people, didn't know anything about narcolepsy other than the casual references made tongue-in-cheek. I read the book on a whim because it was a free download on the Kindle. I am so glad I did! It truly opened my eyes to this life altering condition. It is an engaging story that will not only educate, but will inspire. Definitely recommend!

5.0 su 5 stelle Finally a book that can help friends and family understand Narcolepsy! 27 dicembre 2012
Di Sheila Tucker - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
Julie Flygare has let us into her life to experience with her how narcolepsy can turn your organized planned life into chaos. She did an excellent job of describing some of the symptoms of narcolepsy that the general public know nothing of like hallucinations, cataplexy and sleep paralysis. The media portrays narcolepsy so often as a funny sleeping disorder where you fall asleep in your food. Julie was able to show you how narcolepsy is anything but funny and although very often invisible to others can be extremely disabling with no cure as of yet. Julie fought a great battle with her narcolepsy and completed quite a few life goals. Her story is not all of our stories but certainly illustrates how narcolepsy is not something you can just live with and ignore. It is a daily struggle to just be functional on some days. Thank you Julie Flygare for sharing a private part of you to help bring narcolepsy awareness to the public!

5.0 su 5 stelle Thank you Julie! This book is great for those with Narcolepsy and those trying to understand it. 16 dicembre 2016

I had been diagnosed for a year when I decided to type narcolepsy into the Amazon search bar. Wide Awake and Dreaming was one of the first books that popped up and I immediately downloaded it to my Kindle. I sat and read this book in one day, it was captivating, inspiring, and it gave me hope.

I just graduated from college and am so thankful to Julie because she gave me the determination and the courage to be able to do so. The days when I knew I needed to study, but my body just didn't want to stay awake anymore. Or the days when all of my friends wanted to go out and party all night and I wasn't willing to deal with the consequences the next day. Thank you Julie.

I know have this book in my paperback and a kindle edition. I have given it out to friends and family so they can begin to understand. My Grandma looked at me for the first time and said, "Wow, I get it now. Is that really what you go through?"

5.0 su 5 stelle Absolutely Amazing Book 27 dicembre 2012
Di pwny (Julie Ann) - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
“Wide Awake and Dreaming” is the best book any PWN (person with narcolepsy) could ever hope to find. The author, Julie Flygare, does an amazing job of telling her own story in such a way that even those who have no idea what “narcolepsy” or “cataplexy” are will walk away with a clear understanding of life with narcolepsy. For any PWN struggling to find a way to explain their daily fight to friends and family, this book is a treasure. Simply hand it to anyone who just doesn’t comprehend our struggle, and there’s no way they can read it without feeling compassion for Flygare as she experiences her first symptoms of this mysterious and rarely understood condition.

Flygare does a great job of defining and describing the symptoms, challenges, medications, and side effects that come along with each treatment in such a way that makes the information easy to understand. As a PWN who went undiagnosed for 15 years, I found myself laughing, crying, and commiserating with Flygare as she tried to navigate the shift in her social life after being diagnosed. I felt compassion for her in the moments when she had to choose between feeling sleepy due to lack of medication, or taking the medication and suffering the side effects to have enough energy in order to make it through a social commitment or other activity. Throughout the entire book, I found myself cheering her on. I couldn’t put this one down! As a PWN who constantly falls asleep while reading, that’s the highest level of endorsement I can give. I could not fall asleep until I read the whole thing!

5.0 su 5 stelle Not just for persons with narcolepsy 26 dicembre 2012
Di Lindsay - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
This book is surely a must-read for anyone with narcolepsy, and anyone who loves a person with narcolepsy. But it goes beyond that. It's a book about overcoming adversity and shaping your life into what's right for you, not what you think it's supposed to be.

The author describes the pep talks she has given herself to deal with her narcolepsy: "Just get through this one last year," "Keep moving forward," "Only one more month," "One more week," "You'll just have to keep going." Many of us have felt this way, struggling with something that felt like too much to bear. She finally concludes that she "couldn't just keep going like a robot," she had to "find a path worth living." At some point, it's not enough to just get through another day, you have to get busy living or get busy dying. The author's descriptive style of writing lets you relate to her struggles even if they are not the same as your own, and it is inspirational to hear how she got busy living.
