With the rich mythology, world-building, and action but Kate is an insufferable MC.

I am not someone who is overtly distracted or dissuaded by romantic (sub)plots in novels. I understand how love and romances can affect character's (in their actions, beliefs, and other relationships). Love is a part of life and can deeply move and change people, so I can't begrudge a sci-fy/fantasy story for using romance as a plot device. It just doesn't bother me.

However, Kate is so incredible dense i cannot fathom how so doesn't walk around with glazed over eyes because she just has absolutely no clue. I physically rolled my eyes at her indecisiveness many times, I understand she has only had exposure to this new world for a short period of time, but she seems to be unsure of EVERYTHING at the moment, but most of all herself. Yes, a lot of pressure was just bestowed upon you. And yes, your life is not totally in your control. BUT, you do have some control and it would have been wonderful to see her embrace and exercise that instead of closing herself off and feeling sorry herself.

Sidenote: I problem I have with the love-triangle is that it seems that Brad's character was villianized to show how destined Kate and Arland's love is.

I couldn't decide if I liked this book, or if it annoyed me. I think it might be a combination of the two. The world, the war, and the gods are fascinating - but the drawn out drama with Brad was frustrating every step of the way. Yes, I understand why it was set up like it was, but the "love triangle" was dragged out far beyond what it should have been. Especially considering there wasn't really a love triangle. More like a couple with a crazy stalker.

Brad did surprise me, though. At first, I was trying to figure out why he was even put into the story...I was prepared to crack jokes about how effective he was as a character. But then, you find out why he's in the story. It takes a good portion of the book to get to that point, but it's well worth it when you finally do!

I would also like to point out that this book has the chattiest gods I've ever seen in a fantasy story. I'm pretty sure they told Kate everything she needed to know to do her job right. That was impressive.

The romance between Kate and Arland seemed a bit too easy. I get that there's this whole prophecy thing behind it, and Kate has had dreams of him for years before they met, so she technically knew him...but the entire thing felt rushed. Kate even jokes about it in the book, that they've only known each other for a few weeks but they're already madly in love. They barely know each other. Not much time was spent developing the bond between the two of them. One second, Arland was trying to be professional and detached, the next, they're making out by a river. Their relationship might have felt a bit more...real...if more time had been spent letting the readers see them interacting with each other. They're together for all of a week, and then the book jumps to three weeks later, and the main conflict of the story kicks in. Slow down there, book!

As far as plot goes, this book is nothing new - it was at least interesting, though. The book leaves you wanting to read more, but answers enough questions so that you're not frustrated by the time you're done reading. I appreciated that.

So, aside from a few minor problems I had with Wilde's Fire, it was a pretty fun read. Definitely more of a chick book.

5.0 su 5 stelle I absolutely love and adore this story 28 giugno 2013

Here is my official view on fantasy novels, you ready? The books will either be amazing or disappointing. It's hard to find middle ground, especially when someone is creating a world all their own. I respect people that do that sort of thing because I know how much effort and thought it takes to make a world that makes sense. But that doesn't mean it always works out, so this made me wary at first when I began to read this novel. Somehow along the way, it captured my heart and five stars. The story was wonderful to read and I certainly found myself reading the rest of the series after I finished this one because I couldn't get enough. It became one of those books that once I set it down, I wanted to pick it back up and read it all over again.

Kate, from the moment the story began, held a huge amount of pressure upon her shoulders even when she didn't realize it. Dreams of one man and death haunt her each night and she knows that the man of her dreams is real and that she is in love with him or at least will be. Of course, no one else seems to believe her but that's their issue not hers. She has a certain amount of obliviousness which is adorable and silent strength that proves to be a great resource to her throughout the story. After following a bright light through the forest while hiking with her sister, Brit, and her best friend, Brad, they find themselves in a world that is definitely not their own. Then she finds herself face-to-face with the man who has haunted her dreams and a prophecy that has been attached to her name since before she was born. Beautiful, calm, strong, and brave are some of the words I attach to her and I love her.

I have a love-hate relationship with Brad over the course of the novels. Once you read the books, you'll understand why. He is the typically friend-zoned guy who seems to think he has a chance with the main character when really, she's been in love with this dream guy since she was fourteen. He sadly stumbled into the wrong world when Kate drags him to a world she has only dreamt about and it was most certainly at the wrong time. When he finally gets the nerve up to kiss her, it turns out his whole situation takes a turn for the worse and leaves him without any idea that she doesn't feel that way for him. Of course, his story can only get worse as the story progresses.

Flanna was an endearing character from the moment she was introduced to the novel. She had a witty, sarcastic, and loving way about her that made it hard not to love her. It was clear that she was similar to the woman of the house in this military base that Kate finds herself in. Her jobs were making food for everyone there (which is a higher number than I would ever be willing to cook for) and also caring for the animals that they housed their, such as horses and chickens and goats. Kate and Flanna quickly became friends as they worked together on those duties and found a certain amount of common respect for each other that could not be found with anyone else. She wasn't afraid to ask Kate to work with her and she definitely wasn't afraid to call her on the carpet when she was being stupid and moody.

Arland is the main love interest of the story, although the two of them seem to face a great deal of challenges along the way. He is a clueless male when it comes to certain things about Kate and yet he is a born leader. One of the youngest to take command of a military base, he has a bright and powerful future ahead of him that many expect. He rarely loses his cool in the face of intense and dangerous situations and shows his strength multiple times throughout the course of the book. However no love story is complete without Kate saving him a couple of times, even though he was born to protect her. Who knows, sometimes things get a little backwards.

I absolutely love and adore this story. Read it. No seriously, go check it out.

The premise behind this storyline is a good one. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the author didn't begin the story as well as she possibly could have. The heroine is supposed to be in college and yet she acts like a grade school girl in nearly every chapter. Kate has no control over any of her feelings--from fear to love to anger, She's apparently a 12 year old trapped in an adult's body! It is extremely distracting. She just isn't as strong as I feel she should or could be. I hoped that by the end of the book she would have found a bit of inner strength and purpose/courage, but much to my intense disappointment she did not. And speaking of endings, this book simply ends. It feels as if there are several chapters that have been torn out and thrown away. There isn't a conflict that the main characters have struggled through or even a revelation within Kate herself regarding her abilities. The ending is extremely poorly done. Overall, though, the story was a decent on and I DID enjoy reading it, it just didn't live up to the promise of the story it could have been. I doubt that I will purchase the sequel. Maybe I will see if I can borrow it from the kindle lending library for free, but I am disappointed enough with this first installment that I won't pay money for the second.

I am all about fantasy novels with a little love story thrown in, so I really enjoyed Wilde's Fire. The storyline was original, which is definitely a bonus and a nice break from today's fads. I actually like that Kate went so willingly with her fate, as it was nice to read about someone embracing their destiny rather than whining about it for most of a book.

Another thing I enjoyed was the style. I very, very rarely like present tense because so few authors get it right. I was really impressed with this book BECAUSE it was done so well. I kept waiting for the tense to break, but it never did. So, well done!

I do wish the love story had either been played down, or that they just got it on already. While I enjoy a good love story, I don't care for the skirting around one another, "will they, won't they" game. Also, Kate isn't stupid, so I don't know that I fully buy her not realizing the truth about Brad's feelings. That is solely personal preference though and not something I'd hold against the author, especially since, after I'm done with the currently books waiting to be read, I'll be snatching up the rest of the novels in this series.
