For a while, I kept getting books that started out strong from the gate, but then lost steam halfway through and fizzled out. Unfortunately, this is one of those books.
The character, Senna, started out as a strong, believable character. I loved that her courage was not too obvious and was tempered with curiosity and worry for the unknown. She had me right up until after she met the boy who was supposed to help her. She gets so angry at her mother for not trusting and keeping secrets and then she goes and does the exact same thing.
It went downhill from there. I mean, Senna spends years "training" to fight the evil witch at the end and what did we get? They sang songs and threw some seeds.
The only character I liked at all in the story was Joshen, and there were times when I wanted to tell him to stop wasting his time on Senna. I really hate weak characters and this story is filled with them. What happened to books where females are SMART?

Brusenna is a young, untrained witch, feared & taunted by the people in the town she must visit to make purchases. Soon after, her mother leaves to join with other witches to defeat the evil Espen. Senna follows to find her mother after months pass. Along the way, she meets Joshun, learns to use her voice & has many adventures along the way. A not so typical book about good vs. evil, this is also a story of a young woman's growth into a strong, independent leader.

This is an entertaining read, full of action, adventure, humor, young love & hope. I loved the Yoda-like Pogg & all of the characters are well developed. The world-building is great, the writing is wonderful. A great read for young readers as well as those of us who are young at heart!

Witch Song (Witch Song #1) by Amber Argyle is such a deep and exciting book, I was taken by surprise at how wonderful it was. Looking at the cover I thought it might be a nice cozy witch story, oh no it is not! It is a strong story with powerful witches, a twisting and rich plot, lots of colorful characters, mysteries, adventure, action, magic, strange creatures, a touch of romance, and so much more. I had to stay up all night to finish it! Lots of twist, turns, shape shifting, good vs evil, suspense, and awesome fantasy. I KNOW better than judge a book by the cover, I am not a young kid, and this book is proof, this is a book of power, magic, mayhem, and wonder. What a great job! I have got to read book 2 now! (When I can afford to lose more sleep, lol)

2.0 su 5 stelle Not for me. 28 giugno 2014

I like the world that the author created and the new twist on witches and the use of their power. I lost interest as I learned more about the ho-hum main character that was supposed to find a way to defeat an all powerful witch that all the other most powerful witches could not defeat. The main character does not seem to learn or grow from her supposed hardships on the journey she takes to become a witch. Everything seemed to just fall into her lap- a boy protector, a servant frog man, her magic... And while these are singing witches, there just seemed to be a lot of hiding except when it was convenient for the main character. This story just did not work for me. I had a hard time believing that the predecessor good witches were unable to defeat the villain but the main character just read a few of their books over a few months to gain her power while the villain waited patiently.

Witch Song is a very unusal magical story. It is at the heart, the story of a young witch on a crusade to gain confidence and learn the spells of her mother, only to save her and other witches from the clutches of an evil witch. Some of the story romps ahead with great fun, interesting phrasing and descriptions. Then at times it sort of deflates into confusing bits and hopelessness. Overall, the effort is good, do away with some of the self-incriminations that at times bogs down the story. Yet I kept hopeful it would get better and did. The love story that is entwined, was good at first then left me cold. Not sure if there is to be more about these kids. This is a series I suppose, and hope there is more. As for the Stars on some levels it was a 2.5, on others a 3.5, I would have liked to give it more, but it falls a bit flat in parts, or maybe that is just me. Still if one likes fantasy worlds and witches, Witch Song is engaging enough for older teens and young adults, although not pithy for advanced fantasy lovers.
