Throughout history, countless women have boldly stepped out in faith and courage, leaving their indelible mark on those around them and on the kingdom of God. In lively prose Michelle DeRusha tells their stories, bringing into focus fifty incredible heroines of the faith. From Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila, and Anne Hutchison to Susanna Wesley, Harriet Tubman, and Corrie ten Boom, women both famous and admirable live again under DeRusha's expert pen. These engaging narratives are a potent reminder to readers that we are not alone, the battles we face today are not new, and God is always with us in the midst of the struggle.

Michelle DeRusha writes a monthly column on religion and spirituality for the Lincoln Journal Star and is a regular contributor to Prodigal Magazine, The High Calling, and other online journals. She also writes about faith in the everyday on her blog at

5.0 su 5 stelle A Book to Savor and Learn From 27 agosto 2015
Di S. Mast - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
I first heard the author interviewed on a podcast I regularly listen to (The Art of Simple) and the idea intrigued me. I learned so much from this book, and I'm so glad I bought it. I actually have a family member in mind who I'd like to pass it on to, so they can read and savor it like I did. Each woman has a 5-7 page mini-biography, which felt just the right amount of length if you have to fit 50 in there! I read this book slowly and intentionally, only reading about 2 women per day so I'd really be able to remember and think through their life story. I didn't know the facts behind at least 25 of the women included, and I was happy to see a few who I love, also. I thought the writing was excellent: clear, concise, and enjoyable. I'd deifnitely read another book by DeRusha!

5.0 su 5 stelle Meeting heroes of the faith I never knew about 20 dicembre 2014

One of the things I most appreciated about this book is Michelle introduced me to women I would probably never have known about, such as Pandita Ramabai and Mary McLeod Bethune. Each of the 50 women's very different life circumstances showed God's creativity and diversity. I also learned more about women I had heard about but never studied in depth, such as Amy Carmichael, Therese of Lisieux and Harriet Tubman.

The direct quotes from the women were also one of my favorite features of the book. For example, "I am content to fill a little space if God be glorified." - Susanna Wesley

I'm impressed with how Michelle condensed each woman's life into historically-detailed vignettes for each chapter. I've been slowly reading through it.

If you'd like to know the 3 women Michelle DeRusha would most like to have coffee with and why, here's my interview of her at

4.0 su 5 stelle excellent overview 5 aprile 2015

The author of this compilation brings together a unique combination of 50 women from all walks of life and multiple centuries to show how each followed God in obedience. The short biographies make pleasant reading. From an historian's perspective, I wish the author had used more primary source material where it's available. Some of these women wrote autobiographies, and yet those are not the primary resource for the author's research. They don't always make it into the recommended books for further research. To her credit, the author includes a broad spectrum of nationalities and branches of Christianity.

5.0 su 5 stelle Encouraging 4 maggio 2015

It was so refreshing to read about women's contributions to the kingdom! Many books give testimony to men of God but we seldom hear about godly women. I also appreciate the author highlighting women of color as well as women of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. Some reviews criticized the fact that some of these women weren't Christians but God can and does use non-believers for His purposes. I think the main focus needs to be on the courage and boldness of these women who against some seemingly insurmountable odds were overcomers.

5.0 su 5 stelle Every chapter is like reader candy 17 settembre 2014

What a delightful book! Every chapter is like reader candy.

Even though I grew up in a Christian family, I was surprised how many of these women I did not know. The wide range of interests and the expanse of centuries guarantee that everyone will find a faith heroine somewhere in these pages.

Best of all, is the conversational style and personal interest slant that Michelle DeRusha brings her carefully researched information to the page.

If you don’t usually read history, this is the book to introduce the non-fiction genre into your reading repertoire. And the table of contents makes it easy to pick and choose your way through the book---or to refer back to a favorite.

Now, let me get back to read one more chapter!
