Evil awakens in the heart of the mountain.

Kaiya senses the presence of dark magic near her home in the Wrathful Mountains. The trouble is, she is the only sorceress for hundreds of miles, and no other magical beings are known to live nearby. Soon tremors rock her village, endangering the lives of those she loves. An urgent plea from the north summons her on a journey to send the evil back to its rest.

Joining Kaiya on her quest is Tashi, High Priestess of the Ulihi, a tribe once believed extinct. Attempting to save the life of her sister, Tashi calls upon a long-dead god, unleashing its evil upon the world. Now she must journey alongside the sorceress in hopes of repairing the devastation she has caused.

Lana Axe lives in the Missouri countryside surrounded by dogs, cats, birds and reptiles. She spends most of her free time daydreaming about elves, magic, and far-away lands.

4.0 su 5 stelle The Wrathful Mountains Whisks You on a High Fantasy Ride 19 aprile 2016

Reading Lana Axe’s The Wrathful Mountains is somewhat akin to jumping on a high fantasy themed water ride – it takes you along at its own pace, depositing you where it will. I was pulled along the current of the narrative even as I was craning my (figurative) neck to visually parse the world of that is part of the Nōl'Deron series. We meet the Ulihi, and their intriguing high priestess, Tashi, who comprise a native tribe whose identity and practices have continued unbroken for time out of mind. We follow the exploits of Kaiya, a Dwarf sorceress where magic is almost exclusively in the hands of the elves. She is closely followed by her friend, and sometimes more, Galen the elf, who, of course, studies Dwarf runes. This unlikely cast of characters, along with help from the stalwart mining dwarves, are tasked to rid the world of recently awakened evil set to destroy the world. Relying on her power with wind and her own wits, Kiaya is obliged to step into the line of fire with potentially more capable help unable to be reached in time.

The Wrathful Mountains is the most recent entrant into the Nōl'Deron series; while one's experience may be enriched by reading the previous books unlike most fantasy series, the may be read on its own. One of the things I found intriguing about the book that it builds our understanding of the characters and their relationships within the context of the narrative. In other words, rather than focus on exposition or memories to have us come to know the characters or their connections, it does so through the action. So, before I even knew it, Ms. Axe had me caring what happened to their characters and the people to whom they are tied.

This tale is an intense drama where evil and good collide. A world of magic, enchantment, elves, dwarves along with other mystical beings such as stone monsters, goblins and such has been created for the reader. Enter at your own risk.
I loved the heroine—sorceress, Kaiya, and I adored her violet hair. She was set-apart, different than the others, special. She was courageous in her attempt to save her village from the rumblings and shakings of the earth. She had to go deep into the mountain to search out the evil plaguing everyone. A perilous search has begun. Will she succeed in her endeavor in time to save her village?
4.0 su 5 stelle An Adventurous Quest 4 aprile 2016

This is a classic tale about a group of diverse characters meeting by happenstance and setting out on a quest to track down and stop a vast, powerful evil. In so doing, and not entirely clear what they're up against, they are beset by unnatural disasters, otherworldly creatures and even the mountains themselves. The magic system, integral to the story, is well conceived, based on elemental forces, and has realistic limitations.

Tashi, the high priestess of a lost and dying mountain tribe, was my favorite character. Tormented, racked by grief and doubting her faith, she performs a dark invocation that seemingly unleashes a primeval destroyer on the world. Kaiya is a dwarf and a sorceress, which sets her apart from her kind. Tough, stubborn and determined, she wins Tashi's trust and helps her to realize the source of a curse on her tribe and what she must do to set it right. Kaiya also loves an elf named Galen, whose sensitivity and knowledge of magic plays an important role in their quest.

The author has a clean, unaffected writing style which I found refreshing. I did have some minor and fairly subjective issues with the narrative: it's written in what looks like third person omniscient, which I found disorienting in places, though it did make for a more compact story. There was also a tendency towards superfluous information when describing things. But I really enjoyed this story. An epic, heartwarming air, beautiful descriptions of the natural world, an engaging plot and a climactic, bittersweet conclusion made for a great read.

I was given this book in exchange for a fair review.

The Wrathful Mountains, written by Lana Axe, is a young adult high fantasy novel. This book is chock full of excitement, and danger lurks around every corner. Dwarves and elves take center stage in this book, joining forces to battle an ancient evil and save the lives of those they love.

The story unfolds as Tashi, a high priestess in the Ulihi tribe, struggles to save the life of her sister, Annin, and her unborn child. She begs the gods to spare their lives but is met with only silence. In a final act of desperation, she calls upon a long-dead god and inadvertently awakens an ancient evil bent on destruction.

Kaiya, a sorceress who can sense the awakening of the Gawr's mind from deep within the mountain, is called upon by a miner named Raàd, to stop the creature and end the frequent avalanches that have plagued the mining town. So the two dwarves, Kaiya and Raàd, set out with their friend Galen, who happens to be an elf, in search of a way to keep the creature from breaking free.

In their travels, they meet Tashi, who is determined to help defeat the evil she holds herself responsible for reviving. Their journey is fraught with perils in the form of avalanches, a yukona who wanted to possess them, goblins, and a horde of rock monsters sent by the Gawr.

The plot and characters are well developed. The story is full of action and heartwarming moments, and I truly enjoyed reading it. Will they be able to surmount the obstacles in their path and destroy the ancient evil before it ultimately destroys them? Find out for yourself in this classic tale of good vs. evil!
3.0 su 5 stelle Enjoyable Fantasy Tale 16 marzo 2016

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Wrathful Mountains is a stately fantasy beset with elves and dwarfs, angry gods and goblins.

The tale is of a young dwarf sorceress who aides a tribal priestess to find out what is causing so much suffering on her people. Together they journey deep into the land of Nol’Deron. Their path is hindered by the actions of a wrathful god whose sole purpose is that of causing chaos.

High fantasy woven into a charming tale of friendship and courage, The Wrathful Mountains is a pleasant read, if a bit stiff. The prose was well presented and led to an enjoyable tale that will warm any fantasy-lover's heart. The characters are varied, although their individual personalities were a bit suppressed. This could just have been the narrative style though, and perhaps just personal opinion.

If you're looking for an enjoyable fantasy tale, then I would highly recommend The Wrathful Mountains.
