After following for a long time the author's blog, I am finally able to read her book.
The Rainforest Mind is the perfect image to describe the complexity of a gifted mind. It is a powerful book for everyone who has been dealing with the feeling of inadequacy that often is born out of not being recognized as gifted.
As many researchers as proven, giftedness is a genetic factor. Parenting a gifted child is difficult. To help them you need to recognize the traits in yourself.

This book beautifully articulates a radical new way of viewing sensitivity as an aspect of gifted intelligence. Paula's history as a former TAG teacher, and current specialist in gifted development, allow her to speak with authority, humor and depth on the complexities of the gifted experience. She includes both the unexpected advantages and the unique disadvantages of those whose functioning far exceeds the average.

Anyone with a gifted child or a history of unusual or advanced intellect should read this book right away. You will find your previous assumptions challenged and identity redefined. You will experience relief and expansion as you integrate this rich view point. Reading the in-depth case histories will give you an experience of membership in the Rainforest Tribe.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Seminal and Compelling Book 7 luglio 2016

Your Rainforest Mind is THE book for those people beginning their exploration of gifted issues as well as those (like me) who have been in gifted education for decades. I own dozens of book on giftedness (and I have read many more), and this book rises to the top for its holistic approach to understanding gifted people.

As a professor of gifted education, I was always looking for the best resources to expand my students’ hearts and minds about gifted people. I certainly would have required this book for my courses on "Introduction to Gifted Education" and "Social and Psychological Foundations of Gifted Children."

What makes Prober's work seminal is that it includes the stories and voices of her clients, it provides a wealth of valuable resources, and it has the potential of having a significant impact on gifted adults, and on the parents of gifted children.

The stories of Prober's clients are so compelling, I am grateful to be able to learn from them, and I know many readers will now hope to find a therapist who connects so deeply with their rainforest minds.

5.0 su 5 stelle Fantastic. A book you'll read over and over and reference for the strategies 27 giugno 2016
Di Meredith Parker - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

This is SUCH a fantastic new book! It's written by Paula Prober, a licensed counselor for gifted adults. I was really touched by her website and blog and ordered this book as soon as it was available. Each chapter includes typical gifted challenges illustrated through clients she has seen over the years (names changed for anonymity) along with strategies for EACH chapter. I loved this because it's easy to read and relate to and rather than just say "what and why" it shares"how can I get through this, what can I try" with realistic ideas. As opposed to some more typical academic books discussing gifted topics in a formally instructive way, this book infuses many of the same gifted topics through examples gifted adults will readily recognize -from perfectionism, idealism, sensitivity, childhood trauma, asynchronous development, anxiety, existential depression, etc. It's a relief not only to read about so many others we can relate to, but also to learn new ideas- what do we DO about it? So many books leave out the REAL strategies leaving me to wonder "Should I seek counseling?" and then the circular reasoning of "Well, but where can I find a gifted counselor?" And then we are back to square one. :) This book has the major advantage of all the strategies at the end of each chapter. So if you're a reader who loves to digest on your own time and have thought that "if only I could find a person who COULD help" then it's a great book! Gifted adults will walk away feeling understood, relieved, and with ideas we can try to invest in ourselves just the way we are. It's really realistic and helps us accept how normal we are. So empowering ! A really great read for gifted adults and young adults. This is a book I will read over and over again as I continue to grow and change in my life. I'm very thankful for the ongoing research on gifted adults (we are simply grown-up gifted kids afterall). :) Get this book for yourself or someone who is dear to you. You'll love it.

A creative, insightful read. Paula Prober is well-named, as she walks with you through this comprehensive mental probing of what she calls "Your Rainforest Mind." Spoiler: She gives her own verbal illustrations on the different types of minds she's encountered throughout her long career as a therapist and teacher. Some minds she describes as deserts, some as plains, but the "gifted mind" she refers to as a rainforest...because rainforests are infinitely complex and ever-changing places.
I related to this book on a personal level, and it helped me greatly in discovering the facets and abilities within myself. It's a wonderful guidebook for those who can't figure out what they want to do in life (because they want to--and CAN do literally EVERYTHING) and are hungry for uniquely personalized advice.

Not many help books for the gifted, so I consider this an extremely valuable and necessary read for the Rainforest Mind.

This book reads like candy, yet ends up being incredibly nutritious. A book beneficial for both therapists wanting to deepen their practice, and for any complex person seeking insight into why the world feels like such a hard place to be. The author establishes context for the highly sensitive and the highly intelligent and offers that individuals with a Rainforest Mind (RFM) exist within a culture that is goal oriented and places value on achievement. Rather than offer the different clinical interventions that might help the RFM 'deal' and therefore fit better into the culture they find themselves in, Prober instead invites the reader to relate to a model of an emergent human process rather than a linear one. Here, the RFM exists *within* and *as* a matrix from which intelligence is a multi-variate emerging process to be celebrated...rather than needing coping skills simply to exist. The RFM cannot be trapped in a cause and effect paradigm; therefore cannot be pushed along a linear pathway arriving at a place of where economic gains can be more directly and quickly extracted from them. Instead, through simple yet profound story-telling, Prober makes it safe for the reader to find herself advocating for what is arguably more naturally human: an emergent mind that coincides with emergent processes where she can be more fully herself and come to her most expressed state in whatever way she needs to get there. Prober's book celebrates those who are both strong enough and sensitive enough to find themselves through discovery and curiosity - despite what society demands of us.
