A Christian homeschooling mom of a large family, Suzy LaBonte never imagined one of her children might die by suicide. She received an agonizing blow the day her sixteen-year-old son, Zachary, without threat or forewarning, chose to end his own life. The following months were bleak and sorrowful as Suzy struggled down a confusing path of shock, anger, guilt, and depression.

Slowly putting one foot in front of the other, Suzy focused on the unfailing character of God, her husband's faithful partnership, and the hopeful faces of the children before her. Plodding and stumbling toward understanding and healing, Suzy found that God's faithful companionship and the promises of His Word lightened the darkest hours and sustained her life.

Healing came slowly and with it, transforming lessons of pain and courage. With a passion to reach out to encourage other suicide survivors, Suzy shares the healing that is found in Christ Jesus.

Includes a Survival Guide for those impacted by suicide and suggested resources for further support.

Suzy LaBonte is the mother of eleven wonderful children (five birth and six adopted). She has a BS in Elementary Education from Cedarville University and homeschools her family in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She provides foster care to abused and neglected children and facilitates a support group for survivors of suicide loss.

Zachary's Choice is a very personal account of a mother's journey through the first year after her son's suicide. Suzy is so honest about the struggle she had to come to terms with Zachary's choice to kill himself. There are real gems of wisdom to be found in her story. One example: On the first night after their son's body was discovered in the woods they made a very important decision as to how they would deal with the tragedy. They knew that marriages can be destroyed after something like this happens because there is always a great temptation to point fingers and place blame. But they decided to meet the situation head on, and do it together, knowing that they would have different perspectives and different ways of reacting to the tragedy. They agreed ahead of time to let those differences be expressed and lived out in each of their lives with no judgment and no criticism. They would grow together and the would support one another. So wise!

My hope is that this book will reach a large audience - and not just the families of teens who have committed suicide, but others as well. There are many ways that a beloved family member of any age commits suicide. Some die and are never seen again, others live a living death because of sad and irrevocable choices they have made in their lives. Suzy LaBonte offers great comfort and help to those of us who also have to live with those choices. She also shows us how we can give the best kind of help to those who have to endure the grief of a loved one's suicide, no matter how old that person was at the time.

Great book. I highly recommend it.

This book is a true story of a mother's journey into the nightmare of her beautiful young son's suicide. With no warning whatsoever, 16 year old Zachary did the unthinkable, he took his own life leaving behind a loving family blindsided by the act, aching with grief and torn by bewildering tragedy. Yet, Zachary's mother tells a beautiful tale of the abiding love of God. At no time during this awful event nor in the years that have passed has this loving mother been abandoned. Even though she walked through the valley of the shadow of her child's death, the Lord was with her. His rod and staff comforted and guided and helped to make her whole.

M own faith has been strengthened by Suzy's story. Through this book, you will learn that life does not end in the grave, and with God, all things are possible. I highly recommend this well written and edited journey through one mother's tragedy. When you've finished with it, your own walk with God will be stronger. Suzy did not have to tell this incredible tale. Her pain is so intensely personal. Yet her desire that you know the Savior who walks beside her daily was greater than her pain. Thank you Suzy.

My heart aches for you. You will always be in my prayers.

I found it a very sad tale. I thought it was very helpful. I am a Christian. I was dealing with a friend with a similar grief. Reading this book helped me have some sympathy for my friend and she said that she thought I understood. Well, I had not really understood, but I knew what to say to her. If you have had a suicide or tragedy , this book could help you express your feelings. Even if you have not had to deal with this, you could help someone who has been through this as a Sympathizer.

Zachary's Choice is a great book to have in your or your church's library. Suicide is still a taboo subject in the Christian world and those left feel shame, confusion and pain. This book will help the person who lost someone to suicide and the church to be open to ministering to the hurting survivors.

I loved the book! Story was very sad but I related to a lot of the emotions mentioned by the mom. I couldn't put it down and finished it within 3 days. I used the book for a report in my Grief class.
