5.0 su 5 stelle A t-shirt soaking ride through the strange relationships forged by brilliant people. 4 aprile 2017

So I know quite a bit about mystery novels (500+ on my shelf) and a fair bit about BSD and computer conferences. Michael, who has attended more cons that I have, nails both the geek aspect and the mystery aspect in this excellently crafted novel.

The protagonist, Dale, is a character familiar to everyone in the computer community. We spend a fair amount of time inside Dale's head, and though his issues are not my issues, his way of looking at the world resonates. He is so very similar to a number of young programmers I've known, which make the story all that much more believable. For readers who aren't geeks or don't know any geeks well, this novel might well be an eye-opener into what it's like to be inside the head of one of us.

I loved following Dale's investigation, and the ways he had to push himself to find the answers he needed; this attribute he shares with every gumshoe in every gin joint in all the world. Keeping the body count to 2 is an accomplishment in a murder mystery, and yet follows the classic murder mystery complication. (No spoilers, you know what I mean, right?)

I didn't love the ending, because it didn't surprise me. In the real world, murders usually aren't, so I can really hold that against Michael. The book did leave one burning question, though...

5.0 su 5 stelle A solidly enjoyable mystery novel with a fun, unique setting and colorful cast of characters 27 marzo 2017

A solidly enjoyable mystery novel with a fun, unique setting and colorful cast of characters. Anyone who has attended a conference can imagine how Dale must feel as he arrives at BSD North for the first time. He isn't quite sure where he should be, is having trouble matching faces to names, tries not to think about the presentation he's meant to deliver and grows ever more certain that he ought to have packed more shirts.

It was great fun reading about Dale's use of his personal skill set to dig into the meat of the mystery unfolding before of him and attempts to get to know the other attendees (read: suspects!) despite the awkward self-consciousness many would feel in his situation. The work is delightfully hilarious, often inspiring unexpected, giddy laughter.

5.0 su 5 stelle Git Your Git Commit Murder, Pronto! 5 aprile 2017

Riveting. You don't need to be a geek to enjoy this novel... but it helps. Anyone who's ever attended a professional conference will relate to the usual challenges: poor accommodations, buffet lunches, boring lectures, and socially awkward meetups in the bar. Lucas does an excellent job of describing how ADD magnifies these challenges into outright terrors, and then heaps murder on top of that. His protagonist is believable and sympathetic, struggling to overcome both his personal challenges and the immediacy of the mystery. Not your average cozy, the prose is clean and engaging, making the novel an addictive page turner. Recommended for everyone, and highly recommended for open source geeks, or anyone who's ever had to deal with version control.

4.0 su 5 stelle Good read, fun and entertaining. 4 aprile 2017

Anyone who is familiar with the "religious" wars between various developer tools will not be surprised by the ending, but the book is well written, very entertaining, and fun to read. Makes you want to look up and attend the next BSD meet just to watch the show!

Ok. I bought this book under false pretense.
With this author and this title I was anticipating a Top Shelf GIT technical book. What I actually got was so much better. A main character many of us techno geeks can partially identity with. SOs to many in the tech community. This is easily the cleanest fiction I've read by him. I was even a bit misty during the auction.
